Old Way from Sallent to La Sarra

camino viejo de sallent a la sarra comarca alto gallego

DURATION: 1 HOUR (ONE WAY)

DIFFICULTY: EASY, GENTLE CHANGE IN ELEVATION

The local name for this route is Sandicosa and before the road that goes up to La Sarra was built, this was the way that connected both places.

This trail shows walkers a rural landscape of vegetable plots, fields and woods, in an easy walk that the whole family can enjoy.

The country lane is used a lot by the inhabitants of Sallent to go out for a walk on summers’ evenings. You can do the route in winter too, although there can be heavy snow at that time which makes it more difficult.

Start at the village swimming pool. Pay attention and make sure that you take the path that goes by the sports centre (do not end up on the path to the waterfalls [Camino delSalto]). The lane meanders upwards through fields and vegetable gardens until it gets to a wood. Around half way, you will see a curious building: a herder’s shelter dug out into the mountain with a small entrance.

In approximately one hour you will get to La Sarra, up in the mountains and surrounded by high peaks. From here you can return to Sallent by the road, and straightaway you will see a turn-off to the left that brings you back to the swimming pools via the GR11 trail.
