This village developed because of the railway, and its town council has been merged with Javierrelatre since the 1960/70s. The town hall is located in Caldearenas, which has become the capital of the area as it has better infrastructure.
The village is located in an extensive and diverse mountainous area, connected to neighbouring communities by the River Gállego, specifically the section between the Sierra de San Salvador and the Sierra de Javierre that runs from south to north. As it is a full section of river basin, which stretches from high altitude (such as at Presín (1,430 metres), to the valley, the landscape and climate are variable.
Caldearenas comprises eight urban centres: Javierrelatre, Caldearenas, Latre, San Vicente, Aquilué, Serué, Anzánigo and Estallo, as well as a number of hamlets that have no inhabitants, including Artaso, Escusagüás and Sieso de Jaca.
