Formigal

Formigal is a modern, high-altitude, urban centre, situated at 1,550 metres, at the base of the Formigal ski station, and just a few kilometres from the French border at El Portalet.

It is an important international centre for skiing and other winter sports, and during the summer the wide range of sporting activities and organised excursions available in the area makes it a popular centre for mountain tourism.

The upper part of the village comprises an area of chalets, which are a model of their kind, and there is also an area with a number of hotels, apartments and other types of accommodation. Alongside these are many bars and restaurants, and all types of shops.

The church in Formigal is pre-Romanesque. It was built in the 11th Century and is one of the Serrablo churches, unique in Spain. It features many interesting artistic elements including the 12th Century baptismal font from Ruesta, a holy-water font from Cillas dating back to the 17th Century, a 14th Century painting from the transitional period between the Romanesque and Gothicstyles, brought to the church from the shrine at Basarán, as well as a Romanesque Chi Rho incorporated into the tympanum.

You can take in many beautiful and panoramic views on the slopes around Formigal. In particular, from the top of Tres Hombres you can make out the great summits of the Central Pyrenees: Midi D’Ossau, Balaitus, the Picos de Argualas, the Picos del Infierno, Ferraturas and Baladrías. Together they make up an impressive collection of mountain peaks.
