A delightful village at 1,224 metres altitude, Tramacastilla de Tena is hidden away among meadows and hillocks of pine and oakwood. The scenery is unparalleled. The summits of Peña Telera and Peña Blanca are visible on the horizon, and the Búbal Dam is at the base of these peaks.
There is a small 12th Century Romanesque church, with a superb 16th Century Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to Saint Martin.
The traditional festival that takes place in October is worth a special mention. Participants do a tour of the village, visiting every house; the young men dance the paloteao, a traditional dance with sticks, and make toasts in humorous rhyming couplets, between generous places of Spanish ham and strong local wines. We recommend you try the local cuisine, in particular Shepherd’s Migas.
Around 20th January a stage of the Pirena dog-sled race is held at the Escarra Mountain Pass.
