SERRABLO CHURCHES

Located in the upper part of the village, the church in Artois an amazing viewing point. Saint Martin’s is one of the Serrablo Churches but, like some of the others, it has a more archaic appearance. Only a small part of the Church is from the original construction: two wall arches on the old apse.

The rest of the Church is from a later period, though the style is still Romanesque. The Church has a rectangular nave and a semi-circular apse with a semi dome. You have to go through the cemetery to get to the Church; the main door is on the south side of the building. The door has a lintel carved in the form of an ogee arch. The main altar had an altarpiece painted by Francisco Bagetin 1500.

During the 16^th and 17^th Centuries the structure of the Church was altered dramatically. It had been the parish church of the village which extended all the way down the south side of the mountain. However, today’s village is located in the lower part of the slope, and upper part has been abandoned.

The Church has been declared a Property of Cultural Interest (and a Historic/Artistic Monument since 1982).
