CENTROS DE INTERPRETACIÓN

Senegüé’s Glacier Interpretive Centre is an initiative undertaken by the people of Senegüé and Sorripas through their residents’ association. The Centre has received financial support from the Proder fund (ADECUARA), the Sabiñánigo Town Hall and the IberCaja social and cultural fund. The Universidad de Zaragozahas provided scientific collaboration.

Senegüéis located on the Senegüé moraine, a type of glacial topography. The moraine was formed during the Quaternary glaciation and is the most significant feature left from this period in the area. The Senegüé moraine is one of the best examples of glacial topography in the whole Pyrenees. For this reason the interpretative centre was established in this part of the Gállego valley. The Centre has a range of displays showing the different general aspects of glaciers in various scales. Special attention is given to the active glaciers still in existence in the Aragonese Pyrenees and to the glacial elements that remain around Ribera de Biescas.

As a result of the many years of study of the glaciers in the valley, recent mapping of the area and the application of new dating methods, there is a very high level of scientific knowledge at the Interpretive Centre about the cold Pleistocene periods and the formation of the Gállego glacier.

In the Torre de los Baguer (Baguers’ Tower), which was built in the 16th Century, there is an audiovisual presentation, as well as a series of information panels. The tower is located in the centre of the village. In addition, there are a number of other panels located at places of special interest around Senegüé. These panels have a relief of the landscape and show the features in the valley that were created during the Quaternary glaciation.
